After attending a dodgeball tournament hosted by the Science Student Association
(SSA), David Nguyen had a vision. He believed that a dodgeball tournament could
be better organized where the funds raised go to charity. Soon enough, on April
5, 2008, in collaboration with the Bioethics Debating Society (BDS), the first dodgeball
tournament for charity at the University of Ottawa was organized! With a total of
16 teams with at least 6 people in their roster (2 of which had to be participants
of the opposite gender), it was no surprise that the competition was fierce. With
the gold medal in everyone's sight, only one team could come out on top. Team Yakuza
took home the gold by defeating Team PLC in the finals.
Over $360 was raised for the Friends of the Ottawa Hospital to buy equipment and
other items to enhance the quality of life for the patient, and to support medical
research. Overall, the first event, managed by David Nguyen, was a great success.
All participants had a great time and were the reason we were able to donate to
such a great cause! Thanks to all who came out, we hope to see you at our future
events.
Regards,
Arvin Jain
Vice President

The days leading up to Begin 2 Believe's first Volleyball event were exciting to
say the least. The weather switched like a kaleidoscope from sunny to rainy back
to sunny and once again to rainy. Finally on the day of the event, it happened to
rain. This didn't down the team's spirit at all, because we knew that we were doing
this not purely for our own enjoyment, but to help two great organizations (The
Ottawa Hospital Kidney Foundation and the World Vision [China Quake Fund]). We took
our gear and umbrellas, and headed towards the Mooney's bay.
No sooner did we erect the first net, the teams started marching in. All of the
players had smiles on their face knowing that the rain would be an added challenge
to attain the final prize: the gold medal. All the teams battled long and hard,
with powerful spikes, quick digs, and great sets. In the end the team that took
gold was PLC after a well played match with silver medalist Ballerz. Bronze was
won by Boom Shakalaka.
At the end of the day, all the participants were glad to hear Begin 2 Believe Association
say that $250 was raised for each organization. Begin 2 Believe would like to thank
all the participants for their strong spirits and good sportsmanship and hope to
see them at the next event!

Target, Aim, throw that DODGEBALL!! On Sunday July 20, 2008, Begin 2 Believe was
proud to present our second Dodgeball Tournament held at the The Ottawa Hospital
(TOH) Rehabilitation Center free of rental cost! Over 5 hours of competition, against
15 teams of a total of over 100 participants with one goal to win, Team BB was the
ultimate champion.
However, the real winners are the patients at the TOH Rehabilitation Center and
the Riverside Campus Auxiliary where $973 was raised for these great volunteer associations.
Our donation will directly help families financially and people in the community
with disabilities who need funds to acquire equipment for daily living requirements.
With the great leadership of our President David Nguyen and the significant contributions
from our Volunteer Manager Robin Barre alongside with the Riverside Campus Summer
volunteers, we were able to collaborate on a memorable and enjoyable day for everyone,
especially the audience of patients that came to support our cause. I hope to have
your continuous attendance and will see you in the upcoming events!
Cheers,
Joslan Jan

This past Sunday, 18 teams, 120 participants, 50 friends and family, and over 100
citizens of our community experienced an enjoyable, yet significant day at Mooney's
Bay Beach where Beach Volleyball for Charity was hosted by B2B (Begin 2 Believe
Association). The generous City of Ottawa offered free nets to help our city move
towards a better future. Approximately $600 was raised for the TOH Riverside Campus
Eye Care Center that will add to their fund to help treat the eldery to give them
better vision. There were many supporters for this event, but only one winner: Team
Volleyball Obsessed!
Thank you to all the people who came to support our second Beach Volleyball for
Charity! I hope to see you all once again and especially the new faces of our city
at our future events.
Yours Truly,
David Nguyen
President

Where would you spend your time on a perfect, sunny day in Ottawa? On the beach
playing volleyball for charity, of course!
The third Beach Volleyball for Charity event hosted by B2B (Begin 2 Believe Association)
and Youths In Action,
turned out to be an even bigger success of Summer 2008 compared to our previous
events. A total of 22 teams, over 150 participants and volunteers took part in this
volleyball tournament which was held on Sunday, August 31st, 2008 at Mooney's Bay
Beach. This was the first time B2B has collaborated with another organization from
the Ottawa community and it was one of their best decisions yet! This event raised
approximately $1000 for Maison Chance: an organization that provides a "second chance"
for disadvantaged and disabled children in Vietnam. Congratulations go out to team
Casual Six for capturing first place and well done to all the other teams who came
out to support!
B2B would like to extend their appreciation to Quang Phan, Nhung Nguyen, and our
group of volunteers for their help and collaboration with the event; without them,
this tournament would not have happened!
Special thanks to our sponsor Globe Canada for kindly donating the medals.
We look forward to see you at our upcoming events!
Thank you,
Jane Au
Corporate Secretary

$1500 total raised. 16 volleyball teams. 10 basketball teams. 160 participants.
16 volunteers. 100% victorious.
Since the establishment of the Begin 2 Believe Association in April 2008, we have
yet again reached another milestone — marking this past indoor volleyball
and basketball tournament (held on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at the University
of Ottawa Montpetit Gym) — as the first of its kind in B2B history, and the
most dynamic and successful 4—hour indoor event for the Fall of 2008. With
16 volleyball and 10 basketball teams participating in this charity tournament,
we easily reached our envisioned goals with the help of the eager participants from
our previous summer beach volleyball tournaments. There were also new participants
present. New participants heard of the event through friends, Facebook, or advertisements
around the University of Ottawa campus. A minimum of 200 people were in attendance;
including many spectators who came out to cheer on their friends and family members
from the sidelines of the three gyms. These gyms were skillfully used to accommodate
the tournament-style matches. Congratulations to the first-place winners and gold-medalists:
Team Merivale Marauders (volleyball) and Team PLC (basketball)!
This event raised approximately $500 for the Ottawa Hospital - Rehabilitation Centre
(TOH-RC), a charity that is close to the heart of Begin 2 Believe. In July 2008,
TOH-RC and B2B joined forces to organize a charity dodgeball tournament at the Ottawa
Hospital Campus raising a net total of $973 for the Rehabilitation Center and the
Riverside Campus Auxiliary. As the TOH-RC always shows nothing but kindness and
gratitude towards Begin 2 Believe's endeavours, we would like to continually support
them and their initiatives in helping patients focus on individual, physical, psychological,
social and spiritual needs. Like the great Mahatma Gandhi once said, "You must be
the change you wish to see in the world."
The entire B2B Team would like to also give special mention and highlight the following:
— B2B Volunteers: We couldn't have done it without you! To all those that
came out and assisted B2B with the event operations and organization - a huge Thank
You to you for your dedication in ensuring that our tournament ran flawlessly!
— The University of Ottawa Fulcrum, and especially reporter Hilary Caton,
for coming out to capture our Fall event!

— Local Sponsors: Bubblicity (Dalhousie), UOttawa Bookstore, GoodLife Fitness
(Rideau Centre)
Stayed tuned for our upcoming event in early 2009 and we hope YOU can join us in
our charitable efforts in the New Year! :)

Helping The Ottawa Food Bank Fight Hunger
The Ottawa Food Bank was established in 1984 and has been fighting community hunger
ever since. Their mission: "To act as a food bank on behalf of those service agencies
in the National Capital Region distributing food directly to the needy by arranging
for, collecting, processing, storing and distributing to such service agencies the
food they need of an appropriate quality, quantity and variety and in an equitable,
timely and cost-effective way."
The Food Bank provides their services to over 120 member agencies, supporting over
130 food programs throughout the National Capital Region. Some of these member agencies
include: Bon Appetit SFUO, Carleton University Food Centre, the Shepherds of Good
Hope, Operation Go Home, and numerous schools and community centers.
There are 4 major programs run by The Food Bank, each having a huge impact on our
community. They are as follows:
- Fresh Harvest is a perishable food retrieval program. Fresh foods are picked up
daily and delivered directly to local soup kitchens or to Ottawa's emergency housing
shelters.
- City Harvest is another perishable food retrieval program that is centered on prepared
meals or food items from local restaurants, food service providers etc. The prepared
foods are delivered directly to soup kitchens or agencies that have a meal program.
- The Baby Supply Cupboard supplies the Food Bank's member agencies with costly, but
necessary infant items such as baby food, formula, and diapers.
- Kick start is a new program dedicated to feeding the children of underprivileged
families throughout the year. This program consists of school meal programs and
after-school clubs.
In addition, numerous events are held throughout the year to raise awareness within
our community and to help fundraise for The Ottawa Food Bank. Some of these events
are very familiar to us, such as the Thanksgiving Food Drive where food donations
can be dropped off at any Loblaws or Loeb store within Ottawa. Others are more extravagant
such as the Vintage Wine Auction taking place on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at
the Canadian Museum of Nature.
For all the above reasons and more, Begin 2 Believe (B2B) is proud to become one
of the many organizations to support The Ottawa Food Bank.
B2B is a Canadian organization of university students based in Ottawa, Ontario.
Our goal is to raise awareness and encourage today's youth to take part in the many
opportunities in the community that help shape Ottawa into a better and more prosperous
city. To achieve our goals, B2B holds a variety of events not only to raise money
for local and international charities, but also to help young people realize that
they can be a part of the great achievements in our community — such as the
work of The Ottawa Food Bank.
On Saturday, November 8, 2008, B2B held our 6th charity event: a Volleyball & Basketball
Tournament at the University of Ottawa. Nearly 200 students from all over the city
came to participate in the event or came as spectators, contributing to a night
of great success on many levels.
With the support of Ottawa's youth, Begin 2 Believe is happy to present to The Ottawa
Food Bank a sum of $1000. As stated on The Food Bank website, "Every dollar donated
provides five dollars worth of food for our community." Each month, the Food Bank
provides 40,000 people with emergency food assistance, 40% of whom are children.
We truly hope that our contribution today will make a difference tomorrow, and continue
to have an impact on the youth of society in the future.
