January 24th, 2009, marked Day 46 of the bus strike presenting many problems for
individuals to move around the city. However, January 24th was also the day that
marked Begin 2 Believe's third dodgeball event that was held at the University of
Ottawa. A total of 11 competitive teams took part in this event. $500 was raised
for the Ottawa Rehabilitation Centre. The top three teams that were awarded medals
were Picked Last for Gym Class [Bronze], Team Magnum [Silver], and Team Amazing
[Gold]. Begin 2 Believe's Dodgeball Tournament III was very successful even during
the bus strike and we thank all the participants and sponsors for taking part in
this charitable cause. We look forward to seeing you all at our future events!

On March 21st, 2009 Begin 2 Believe hosted its last Winter tournament: the 2nd Basketball
and Volleyball Tournament for charity! A total of $1500 was raised ($1000 for the
Military Family Funds and $500 for the Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre).
In our second indoor basketball tournament, there were both new and familiar faces
from the 12 participating teams. Out of these twelve, our medalists were Court Kingz
(gold), Lau (silver) and Barrhaven (bronze). A few members of the Ottawa University
Men's Gee Gees Basketball team volunteered their time as referees for these games.
A total of 16 teams registered to play Volleyball in this particular tournament;
however, only 1 team came out on top. Team Set To Kill played to win and came out
with the gold medal. Both teams I'd Hit That and Your Mom also played spiritedly
and came out with silver and bronze medals respectively.
In addition to fun and exciting games, participants were also provided with refreshments.
We were able to offer participants and spectators McDonald's sweet Orange Juice,
thanks to a donation made by the Bronson McDonalds. We were also able to provide
a variety of baked goods in the form of a bake sale to all participants. All in
all, this second Basketball and Volleyball Tournament was a success! We hope that
all of you will take part in helping to advance our future successes; be sure to
check out our Summer 2009 events!

Last summer, Begin 2 Believe Association held its first beach volleyball tournament
on a rainy day! However, that did not stop them from contributing to their community
by fundraising over $8000 to date for the following charities: the Ottawa Hospital
Kidney Foundation, the World Vision China Quake Fund, The Ottawa Hospital Riverside
Campus Eye Care Center, Maison Chance, The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Center,
The Ottawa Food Bank, the Military Families Fund, and the Ottawa Regional Cancer
Foundation.
This past Saturday, on July 6, 2009, Begin 2 Believe held their largest beach volleyball
event with 25 teams and over 175 participants. A total of $1225 was fundraised for
The Ottawa Hospital - Rehabilitation Centre, Military Families Fund, and The Ottawa
Regional Cancer Foundation, with 1st place going to Team Kiss my Ace, 2nd place
going to Team Spike Force Volleyball, and 3rd place going to Team Ballerz!
Being with the association from the start, I have witnessed the continuing and growing
support from the people of our city.
I am proud that our participants of all ages, gender, and nationalities understand
the importance of giving back to the community.
I would like to thank you all for your contributions and hope to see you at our

Team Timbo
After almost a year to the date, Begin 2 Believe returns once again to The Ottawa
Hospital Rehabilitation Centre on July 19, 2009 to host its third dodgeball charity
event. The partnership between The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre and B2B
continues to grow as B2B was given permission to use the outdoor and indoor courts
free of charge. In appreciation, the dodgeball event raised a grand total of $1302.50.
Congratulations to team Timbo (which included yours truly) who absolutely blew away
the competition and went home with gold medals. The dodgeball charity event also
marks a major milestone for us at B2B. With this tournament, we can proudly say
that we have now raised over $11 000 in total for various charities in our community.
A special thank you goes out to everyone that has participated in the events because,
without your support, this milestone could not have been reached.
Thank you all and hope to see you around,

On July 25, 2009, the Begin 2 Believe (B2B) Association held its fifth volleyball
tournament for charity. Despite a light rain and a cloudy forecast, the weather
did not deter the B2B team, and with the help of our volleyball participants a successful
event was thrown.

Team PLC wins the gold!
With the support of the participating volleyball teams, and the support of the B2B
volunteers, a total of $743 dollars was raised and donated to the Canadian Liver
Foundation. The Canadian Liver Foundation is the largest organization in Canada
supporting research and education in the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment
of liver diseases.
Exciting matches were held throughout the day, but in the end it was team PLC who
overcame team A.R.V.I.N in their third match to capture the gold. Congratulations
to the Beach Bods who out battled team Sandy Panties to capture the bronze.

On August 22, 2009, B2B hosted its 3rd and final charity beach volleyball event
of the summer. The turnout was great once again and the sun stayed out just long
enough for the 16 teams to get some nice tans and compete for the title. The defending
champs PLC took home the gold certifying them as back to back champs. Shout outs
also go to We Love SNSD and Kara, along with Fresh Start, for their respective silver
and bronze medal finishes.
Team PLC takes the gold!
This is event was extremely successful as $700 was raised for iSisters, who were
represented by the lovely players on Cindy’s Crew. It was really nice to see a bunch
of new faces at this event along with many old ones. We would like to thank all
those who came out to support all the various great causes this summer, and hope
to see everybody again next year.

Team PLC takes the gold!
On October 17, the Begin 2 Believe Association held a charity volleyball tournament.
With 16 teams registered, competition was stiff, but Team PLC ended in 1st place,
followed by team Fresh Start, and team Jackson 6 took third place. Some teams played
for fun while others played to win, but each participant contributed $20 to participate
which was put towards charity. Of the $1,000 raised at this event, $500 was donated
to the Canadian Liver Foundation. Participation in this B2B event promotes knowledge
about liver disease and a healthy life style. There are many causes of liver disease,
and as of right now there are no cures. With the help of these charity events and
participants donations, liver research continues.

Cheque presentation to the Canadian Liver Foundation
My name is Dana Male and I am a student at the University of Ottawa. I registered
to volunteer with the Begin2Believe association through a Community Service Learning
placement as part of a university course. When I showed up at the University of
Ottawa on October 17, 2009 to help out with a charity volleyball tournament being
held in the gymnasium, I was surprised to be greeted by so many young faces. I had
never been involved with an organization fully run by people around my own age (21).
All of the other volunteers that day were also students. As an outsider to the organization
I felt very welcomed as we ate pizza and discussed the tasks we would all take on
that evening. I was given the task of coordinating games according to the schedule
and recording scores of each game. This was one of the larger tasks and I felt useful
carrying it out. I was the go-to person for the players that day. I interacted with
the team members as I told them when they would be playing next, confirming who
had won, and when wishing them luck on their next game or congratulating them for
their big win.
It was great to see the enthusiasm that everyone brought to the courts and how much
fun they all seemed to be having. I realized that this type of charity is really
a great way to go about raising awareness and funding because it’s a win-win situation
for everyone involved. The players have a blast and the foundation gets a great
amount of support. As the night went on, I found myself having a really great time
and I could see myself definitely volunteering with this charity, and others like
it, again.
I think it’s great that there is an organization that recognizes and promotes involvement
of young people in our community. It empowered and encouraged me to get more involved
in the future as I felt that my unique contribution was valued. I realized that
volunteering is a lot of fun and doesn’t have to be work. I felt like I had branched
out and met some really nice people with big hearts and an interest in bringing
people together in Ottawa. Furthermore, it was nice to know that all of the people
there that day were having fun but at the same time, were helping a lot of other
people in need. Specifically, this volleyball tournament was a way to raise money
and awareness for the Canadian Liver Foundation. A representative of the Liver Foundation
made a brief presentation to the team players and volunteers about the causes of
liver disease and ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle and the money raised through
the tournament went towards liver disease research.
We often take our liver for granted and fail to consider it until something goes
wrong with it. Viruses, toxic substances (like alcohol), contaminants, and disease
are some of the enemies of the liver. Even when the liver is attacked by these agents,
often it is quite some time before we become aware of it due to the few, or even
lack of, symptoms associated. Currently there are no cures for liver disease, which
is why it is important to prevent damage before it occurs by making healthy life
choices and getting immunizations against disease-causing viruses. Fortunately,
major advances have been made, and will hopefully continue with the support of donations
and general awareness.
In hopes of promoting further awareness, our readers can follow the link below to
the Canadian Liver Foundation Website. Here you will find general facts about the
liver, information on how the liver works, the impact of alcohol on the liver, and
more.

My name is Amanda Walker and on October 17th, 2009, I volunteered with Begin 2 Believe
as they hosted a charity indoor volleyball tournament. I had never volunteered for
this organization before, or another one like it. I was extremely pleased with the
overall friendliness and enthusiasm each person who participated in the event shared
with one another. Helping out with both the tournament and the bake sale, overall
I had a great time and was glad to spend the afternoon working for an important
cause with a group of refreshing individuals. This organization does an amazing
job at showing how a small group of people with a lot of hard work and dedication
can do something positive and beneficial for their community.
Cheque presentation to The Gladiators (midget hockey team)
Aside from the members of Begin 2 Believe and the group of volunteers there were
16 teams who paid to play and be a part of this tournament. These teams came from
all over the city and were of different age groups. There only objective being to
have fun while taking part in something that matters. Each team was there for the
same reason; to have fun. Out of the 16 teams, PLC took the gold and team fresh
start came in close with silver. By the end of the event $1000 dollars had been
raised. $500 of which was donated to a midget hockey team in the Ottawa area. We
wish this team luck in the future!!
